Antonio Marras Waiting room

On Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 January 2012, Madeinart, in collaboration with NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, Milan) organized a workshop on the theme of ART and FASHION.

Waiting Room was the title of a workshop devised by Antonio Marras and coordinated by Paolo Bazzani, with the participation of Sonia Veroni and Francesca Fornasari. Antonio Marras and Paolo Bazzani invited the participants in the workshop to think about the creation of an installation representing a crowd of people inside a waiting room. The main theme was that of the re-use and the historical value of an object that is part of our heritage.

The participants were asked to take part in person, with threadbare used clothes and a collection of soft toys that had been of importance at some time in their life. These were taken apart, deconstructed, and redefined and the materials obtained were used as the corpus vivendi of the installation. The final result was the creation of an environment inside which were “almost human” figures, with different characteristics according to the sensibility and ability of each participant.

PROGRAMME: Tuesday 17 January, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the participants could visit the monumental installation Dirty Corner together with Francesca Fornasari, the exhibition designer of the Anish Kapoor show; she also gave technical support to the workshop and then held a session of theoretical planning, curated by the fashion designer Antonio Marras.
On Wednesday 18 January, at the same time, the work continued with a practical planning session coordinated by Paolo Bazzani, art director for the fashion designer Antonio Marras.

MATERIALS: For the workshop the participants had to find and bring along the following materials: a sewing machine (if possible); large (shoemakers’ or upholsterers’) needles for sewing by hand; thick thread for sewing by hand; if necessary, sewing-machine reels; pinking sheers; string; plush; coloured pencils and graphite; 20 sheets of brown packing paper; t-square or rulers.

INFO: The workshop took place on 17 and 18 January 2012, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the workshop area of the “Cattedrale” in the Fabbrica del Vapore.
Number of participants: 40 free workshop places, booked in advance, for young students of fashion and textiles, and for young artists and creators. MADEINART was pleased to share this initiative with the students of NABA and of the Milan polytechnic, knowing it would be a useful and important experience for furthering their studies.
