Printing conserving contemporary photographs
On 24 January 2012, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the “Cattedrale” area of the Fabbrica del Vapore, Madeinart, in collaboration with the Fabbrica del Vapore, organized a lesson about Printing, maintaining, and conserving contemporary photographs; this was supervised by Renata Knes, an internationally known restorer and curator, and Angelo Colombo, the director and co-founder of L.A.B. – Laboratorio Arti Bovisa.
The guests of the workshop were Stefano Pezzato, curator for the Centro Pecci; Carlo Fei, freelance photographer; and Demetrio Paparoni, a curator of the show Dirty Corner.
The lesson was concerned with the most recent techniques for printing photographs and with conserving and maintaining them, as well as the restoration of the plastic materials which are increasingly used as a support and also an element that has to be taken into account when evaluating contemporary photographs.
Angelo Colombo, director of L.A.B., spoke of various printing techniques; the choice of various materials as a support; their characteristics; and various mounting techniques and their consequences. Instead, Renata Knes, restorer and curator of contemporary photography, dealt with the delicate question of maintenance and restoration of contemporary photos; of the problems of conserving and restoring photographic materials with a view to professional updating; and of analyzing the many kinds of material supports that are a part of the photographic heritage.
The lesson was for photographers, restorers, and specialists in the sector.
The lesson was free and had 30 participants.
